SMS reminders and how we obtain consent
Who sends the messages
TaxReminder (TaxReminder.ca), a service of Blue Ocean Marketing, Ontario, Canada. Questions: support@taxreminder.ca.
How people opt in
SMS is never enabled by default and we never buy, rent or upload phone number lists. A person receives text messages from us only if all of the following are true:
- They created a TaxReminder account at taxreminder.ca.
- They entered their own mobile number during onboarding or in account settings.
- They actively selected SMS as a reminder channel. It is unchecked until they choose it.
Wherever SMS is turned on, this exact statement is shown beside the choice. It is rendered from a single definition used by all three places, and the same wording is stored on the consent record, so what we hold always matches what the person read:
There are three places it can happen: the standalone text reminders sign-up page, the notifications step during onboarding, and notification settings. Each records the number, the time, the originating IP address and the wording displayed.
Clients added by an accounting firm are emailed an invitation and must complete this same step themselves. A firm cannot enable SMS on a client’s behalf.
What we send
Transactional reminders about the recipient’s own Canadian tax deadlines — filing and payment dates such as T1, T2, GST/HST, payroll remittances and instalments. We never send marketing or promotional messages to these numbers.
First message after opt-in. The first text we send confirms the subscription and carries the full help and opt-out language:
- TaxReminder: You are signed up for tax deadline reminders. Msg frequency depends on your deadlines. Msg & data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help, STOP to cancel.
Subsequent reminder messages:
- TaxReminder: Your GST/HST return for Blue Ocean Marketing is due in 7 days (Oct 31). View details: https://taxreminder.ca/dashboard Reply HELP for help, STOP to cancel.
- TaxReminder: Your corporate tax instalment is due TOMORROW (Dec 15). https://taxreminder.ca/dashboard Reply HELP for help, STOP to cancel.
Wireless carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
How often
Only when a deadline is approaching. Each user chooses how many days beforehand to be reminded (30, 14, 7 and 2 days by default), so frequency depends entirely on their own deadlines and settings. A typical user receives roughly twenty messages a year.
How to stop them
- Reply STOP to any message. This stops all SMS immediately and disables the SMS channel on the account.
- Reply HELP for contact information.
- Turn off SMS at any time in account settings.
Message and data rates may apply. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
Privacy
Mobile numbers are used only to deliver the reminders a user has asked for. We do not sell or share them for marketing. See our Privacy Policy.
